For most small and mid-sized practices, billing is where revenue quietly leaks. Claims get rejected for small errors, follow-up slips when the front desk is busy, and a single departure from a small billing team can stall collections for weeks. That is why more practices, including those here in Illinois, look at outsourcing the work to a dedicated billing and revenue cycle management (RCM) team.
Published market estimates put the U.S. medical billing outsourcing market at roughly $6 to $7 billion in 2026, with analysts projecting growth of about 12 to 13 percent a year. Estimates vary by source and scope, so treat the numbers as a direction rather than a promise. The direction is clear: more practices are handing billing to specialists.
What outsourced billing should actually cover
Claim preparation and submission. Clean claims, including CMS-1500 forms, submitted accurately the first time.
Follow-up on unpaid claims. Someone has to chase claims that sit in a payer queue. This is the step that most often gets dropped in-house.
Denial management. Every denial should be traced to a cause, corrected, resubmitted, and tracked, so revenue is not written off by default.
Reporting. You should be able to see what was submitted, what was paid, what was denied, and what is still open.
Questions to ask any billing partner
How do you handle denials, and how do you report on them? Who works on our account, and is it the same person each time? How is access to patient information controlled, and who can see what? What does the first 30 days look like? And is there a long lock-in contract? A partner that answers these plainly has a real process.
Protecting patient information
Billing involves protected health information, so ask about role-based access, how data is stored and transferred, and what the provider's privacy practices are. Any provider handling your claims should be able to explain how they safeguard patient data in plain terms.
